Girls Who Lift
I’ve always been an active person. From the time I was young, I used to play a lot of sports. When I got into university and wanted to lose weight, I started doing a lot of cardio. The one thing I never did was lift weights because I was afraid of looking too muscular. I was already insecure that I didn’t have curvy hips like normal girls. In High School, people used to comment a lot on my arms. They would say: “Wow, your arms are so muscular, do you lift weights?”. That used to make me feel even more insecure because I thought it made me seem manly. For that reason, I never lifted weights. I never wanted abs, I never wanted biceps. I basically already had them without even trying.
Fast forward to 3rd year. I became really concerned about my lack of curvy hips. Then I went on this site called improve your female curves as well as Nick Nilsson’s site and read his article on how to get curvy hips (Nick Nilsson – How to widen hips). Lo, on improve your female curves talked about on focusing on doing a lot of lower body workouts like: squats, lunges, leg raises, leg curls…etc, and not doing any weights on your upper body. She also talked about doing some cardio and eating more. That way, your upper body will be slim, while your lower body will be bigger…giving the illusion of curves. Nick Nilsson introduced three workouts that I had never done before (Side Lunges, Dumbell abductions, and side treadmill walking), all of which I still do today. I started focusing a lot on lower body…After cardio, I would do a bunch of lower body workouts. I worked on lower body every day. There was even a time when I was squatting 250 times a day, doing different squats (front squats, normal squats, sumo squats, jack squats, one leg sqauts…etc). I did all these exercises…and while my hips became slightly wider, they didn’t curve like I wanted. After messaging Nick Nilsson on Facebook, he convinced me to do heavy weights and less reps. He explained why doing a lot wouldn’t get me the results I wanted. He also encouraged me to take breaks. I did this, and still didn’t get the curves I wanted…while my thighs became even bulkier and more muscular, there was no curve.
I injured myself pretty badly from over exerting my muscles…but I STILL kept going to the gym…now I have a lifetime injury, lol. The change came when one guy I had a crush on told me to start working on my triceps. If you don’t know what triceps are, it’s the part on a woman’s arms that usually gets flabby as she gets older.
This was a change for me because all my life I’d heard that my arms were muscular. Once I started doing tricep exercises, I figured that I might as well work on my biceps and abs. I started alternating leg day and arm and abs day.
Around the time I started Paleo, I discovered this Facebook page called Boss Girls. This page is dedicated to girls who lift. I was shocked to see that the page had almost 700k likes. They had so many photos of girls who lift (those photos I got from above are from that page). While some people commented that the girls looked “manly”, the majority of comments (mostly from guys), were that the girls looked hot and sexy. Even many girls commented that they wanted their bodies to look like Boss Girl Bodies. I also noticed that the girls showed in the photos, most of them had my android body shape but they had worked with it and made it look fit and even sexy.
I eventually messaged some of my friend’s who had told me my arms were muscular and that my glutes were muscular. They told me that they weren’t saying that to be mean. One of my friend’s in high school, had even told me (while I was in grade 12), that she was jealous of my arms…because she has flabby arms (meanwhile I was always jealous of her petite pear shape). Another of my friend’s had told me that she was jealous of my butt because her’s were flabby and saggy with cellulite (she was only about 10 pounds heavier than me). The Boss Girls site shocked me because it showed me that there were many people who found girls with muscles sexy.
Another change came when I was contacted by this guy to do a photo shoot. He was starting a fitness site for strong girls and as soon as he saw my biceps, he offered to pay me 90$ for a 3 hour shoot. When I arrived at his house, he thought I looked a bit tiny but as soon as he saw my quads and triceps and biceps, he was impressed. During that shoot, I felt so strong. I lifted so many things that I hadn’t. I even lifted and squatted him and he weighed 191lbs. He also showed me girls from previous shoots, and told me that some of them had felt insecure about their bodies because they thought it was manly…but he asserted that being fit was good. After that, I felt really proud of myself. Another change came again when I got the Tinder messaging app. I posted a photo of my biceps as a joke and soon I had many guys messaging me, telling me that it looked attractive. There was even one guy who kept telling me to lift more and get ripped.
The biggest change, however, came when I looked at the Facebook page for gym memes. They had posted a photo of this guy who was 70 years old and still fit. He had nice biceps, triceps, and even an 8 pack (and he wasn’t using steroids). I added a Facebook friend on this Muscle group on Facebook. The guy was 51 year old German guy and so fit. He had amazing triceps, biceps, an 8 pack, awesome quads…etc. He told me his training routine and how he eats (he doesn’t even use protein powder! He just eats lots of protein and rice).
I even made a Facebook page for him to use as an inspiration (Facebook Page for Uli). I eventually started adding all these people who were fit and above the age of 50. I even read this news article about a 78 year old black woman called Ernestine Shepherd, who is a body builder. She doesn’t have a 6 pack but she is so fit. Her stomach is absolutely flat. She gets up at 4am every morning and runs 10 miles. She teaches fitness classes at her local gym and drinks 8 egg whites for breakfast.
I was so impressed with all these people who were older and still so fit, even more fit than 95% of the population. It was then I resolved that I wanted to be fit, not because of how it looked, or because some guys like it, but because I wanted to be healthy. I want to be 50 years old and still have a body that I can be proud of. I want to be strong. I want to still be able to run 10 miles a day when I’m 80. I don’t want to be like those old weak seniors. I want to be strong. After all these happenings, I started lifting weights along with my cardio. I worked on my arms, my abs, my back, my legs, and my chest. I lift weights all the time now. I don’t want to be bulky but I want to be fit. I want to be strong.
I think girls should lift weights. I think girls should have muscle. How much muscle you have depends on you but you should still be fit. Here are some photos of me after working out. The old me would work on hiding her arms and never lifting weights…The new me wants to be healthy!
Here are some more photos from the Boss Girls Facebook Page. Boss girls are awesome!
